The gala was in full swing, a glittering spectacle of wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the ballroom, and the air was thick with the scent of champagne and ambition. Everyone who was anyone was there—CEOs, celebrities, politicians. But all eyes were on her.
Evelyn Hart.
She was a vision in a sleek black gown that hugged her figure like it had been tailor-made for her (because it had). Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in loose waves, and her lips were painted a deep, commanding red. She moved through the crowd with the ease of someone who had been born into this world, her every step exuding confidence and grace.

“Evelyn,” he said, his voice low as he leaned in close. “You look… incredible.”
She turned to him, her eyes glinting with something he couldn’t quite place. Amusement? Contempt? “Thank you, Lucas,” she said, her voice smooth as silk. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”
He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m glad you came tonight. I wasn’t sure you would.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” she asked, tilting her head slightly. “It’s not every day you get to see your ex-husband grovel.”
Lucas stiffened. “Is that what you think this is? Me groveling?”
Evelyn laughed, a sound that was both melodic and cutting. “Oh, Lucas. You always did have a flair for the dramatic. But no, I don’t think you’re groveling. I think you’re curious. You want to know why I’m here. What I’m planning.”
He didn’t deny it. “And are you going to tell me?”
She took a sip of her champagne, her eyes never leaving his. “Not yet. But don’t worry, Lucas. You’ll find out soon enough.”
Before he could respond, she turned and walked away, leaving him standing there, staring after her.
The truth was, Evelyn had a plan. A big one. She had spent the last few years rebuilding her life, reclaiming her identity, and amassing a fortune that rivaled even Lucas’s. And now, she was ready to make her move.
Kane Enterprises had been struggling lately. A series of bad investments and a scandal involving one of its top executives had left the company vulnerable. And Evelyn knew exactly how to exploit that vulnerability.

As the night wore on, Lucas couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Evelyn was too calm, too confident. It was as if she knew something he didn’t. And that thought terrified him.
He tried to approach her again, but she was always surrounded by people, laughing and chatting as if she didn’t have a care in the world. Finally, he caught her alone on the balcony, staring out at the city skyline.
“Evelyn,” he said, his voice tight. “What are you up to?”
She turned to him, a small smile playing on her lips. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Yes,” he said, his frustration boiling over. “I would. Because whatever it is, I know it’s not good for me.”
Her smile widened. “Oh, Lucas. You always were so perceptive.”
He took a step closer, his eyes searching hers. “Whatever it is, whatever you’re planning… just tell me. Please.”
For a moment, she just looked at him, her expression unreadable. Then she sighed. “Fine. I’ll tell you. But you’re not going to like it.”
And as she began to speak, Lucas felt the ground shift beneath him. By the time she was done, he knew one thing for certain: his life was never going to be the same.
Evelyn Hart was back. And she was here to stay.
