Chapter 1

The rain fell in sheets, drenching the cobblestone streets of the small, forgotten town of Black Hollow. The kind of rain that felt like it was trying to wash away secrets, but only succeeded in making them heavier. In the dim glow of a flickering streetlamp, a figure stood motionless, her silhouette sharp against the storm. She was the kind of woman who didn’t just walk into a room—she haunted it. And now, she was haunting all of us.

Her name was Evangeline Hart. Or at least, that’s what she called herself. No one really knew who she was or where she came from. She had appeared one day, like a ghost materializing out of thin air, and from that moment on, nothing in Black Hollow was the same. She was beautiful, yes, but it was a dangerous kind of beauty—the kind that made you feel like you were standing too close to a fire. You knew you’d get burned, but you couldn’t help but lean in closer.

The first to fall under her spell was Thomas, the town’s baker. He was a simple man, content with his loaves of bread and the quiet rhythm of his life. But then Evangeline walked into his shop one morning, her eyes like shards of amber, and asked for a croissant. Thomas didn’t even sell croissants. By the end of the week, he had transformed his entire menu, trying to impress her. He started staying up late, perfecting pastries he’d never made before, muttering to himself about how he could make her smile just once. But she never did. She just took her croissant and left, leaving him staring at the door long after she was gone.

Then there was Margaret, the librarian. She was a practical woman, the kind who believed in facts and logic and the Dewey Decimal System. But when Evangeline started visiting the library, Margaret found herself rearranging entire sections, pulling books she thought Evangeline might like and leaving them on display. She even started reading poetry—something she’d always dismissed as frivolous—just so she could recommend something to her. But Evangeline never checked out a single book. She just wandered the aisles, running her fingers along the spines, leaving Margaret to wonder what she was searching for.

And then there was me. I didn’t want to fall for her. I told myself I was smarter than that. But every time I saw her—walking down the street, sitting in the café, standing in the rain—I felt something I couldn’t explain. It wasn’t love. It wasn’t even desire. It was more like… obsession. Like she was a puzzle I needed to solve, a riddle I needed to unravel. I started following her, not because I thought she’d notice me, but because I couldn’t stand the thought of not knowing where she was or what she was doing.

The whole town was like that now. We were all watching her, all trying to figure her out. But the more we tried, the more elusive she became. She was like a shadow, slipping through our fingers no matter how tightly we tried to hold on. And the strangest part was, she didn’t seem to care. She moved through the town like it was a stage, and we were all just extras in her performance.

But then, one night, she disappeared. Just like that. No warning, no explanation. One day she was there, and the next she was gone. And that’s when the madness really began. Thomas closed his bakery, saying he couldn’t bear to make another croissant. Margaret burned half the books in the library, claiming they were all lies. And me? I started seeing her everywhere. In the reflection of a window, in the corner of my eye, in my dreams. She was gone, but she was still haunting us.

They say you can’t be haunted by someone who’s still alive. But I’m not so sure. Because even now, years later, I still feel her. Still see her. Still wonder what she wanted from us. Or maybe it wasn’t about what she wanted. Maybe it was about what we wanted from her. And maybe that’s why we’re all still crazy.
