Liam Carter was the kind of man who turned heads wherever he went. With his chiseled jawline, piercing green eyes, and a smile that could melt even the coldest heart, he was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome. Women swooned over him, men envied him, and the world seemed to bend to his will.
But behind that perfect facade was a man drowning in problems.
It started with the drinking.
Liam had always been the life of the party, the guy who could outdrink anyone and still look flawless the next morning. But what began as a way to unwind after long days at work quickly spiraled out of control.
He told himself it was just a phase, something he could quit anytime he wanted. But the truth was, he didn’t want to quit. The alcohol numbed the pain, silenced the voices in his head that whispered he wasn’t good enough.
Then there were the women.
Liam had never been short on attention, and he wasn’t one to turn it down. He’d had more flings than he could count, each one a fleeting distraction from the emptiness inside him.
But no matter how many women he dated, no matter how many nights he spent in their arms, he always woke up feeling alone.
The breaking point came one night at a high-profile charity event.
Liam had been drinking heavily, trying to dull the anxiety that had been gnawing at him for weeks. He was surrounded by adoring fans and flashing cameras, but he felt like he was suffocating.
That’s when he saw her.
Evelyn.
She was different from the other women he’d been with. She didn’t fawn over him or bat her eyelashes. She looked at him like she could see right through him, like she knew all his secrets.
And for some reason, that terrified him.
They started talking, and for the first time in years, Liam felt seen. Evelyn was sharp, witty, and unapologetically herself. She didn’t care about his looks or his money. She cared about him.
But the closer they got, the more Liam pushed her away.
He was convinced he’d ruin her, that his problems would drag her down like they had everyone else in his life. So he sabotaged things, picking fights and disappearing for days at a time.
And then, one night, he went too far.
It was after a particularly bad fight. Liam had been drinking, and his words were sharp and cruel. Evelyn tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t listen.
“You don’t get it,” he snapped. “I’m not the guy you think I am. I’m broken, Evelyn. And I’ll only end up breaking you too.”
She looked at him, her eyes filled with tears. “You’re not broken, Liam. You’re just scared. But if you keep pushing people away, you’re going to end up alone.”
Her words hit him like a punch to the gut. But before he could respond, she walked out the door.
That was the wake-up call Liam needed.
For the first time in years, he faced his problems head-on. He quit drinking, started therapy, and worked on rebuilding the relationships he’d damaged.
It wasn’t easy. There were setbacks and moments of doubt. But slowly, he began to heal.
And then, he reached out to Evelyn.
She was hesitant at first, and he didn’t blame her. But he was determined to prove he’d changed.
“I’m not asking for a second chance,” he told her. “I’m asking for the chance to earn one.”
Evelyn studied him for a long moment, then nodded. “Okay. But this is it, Liam. No more games.”
Now, Liam’s life is far from perfect. He still has his struggles, and some days are harder than others. But for the first time in a long time, he feels like he’s on the right path.
Because being handsome isn’t enough. It’s what’s inside that truly matters.
