Chapter 1

The first time I saw him, I thought he was an angel.

He was standing in the rain, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, his piercing blue eyes scanning the crowd as if he were searching for something—or someone. I was sitting in a café, sipping a latte and pretending to read a book, when our eyes met. For a moment, the world seemed to stop.

His name was Adrian Blackwood, and he was unlike anyone I’d ever met. Charming, mysterious, and impossibly handsome, he had a way of making me feel like I was the only person in the room. When he smiled, it was like the sun breaking through the clouds.

But there was something else, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. A darkness lurking beneath the surface, a shadow that seemed to follow him wherever he went.

I should have known better. I should have run.

But I didn’t.

Our first date was magical. He took me to a secluded beach, where we danced under the stars and talked for hours. He told me about his childhood, his dreams, his fears. He made me feel like I could tell him anything.

But there were gaps in his stories, details he glossed over or avoided altogether. When I asked about his family, he changed the subject. When I asked about his job, he gave vague answers.

I told myself it didn’t matter. Everyone has secrets, right?

As the weeks turned into months, I fell deeper and deeper in love with him. But the darkness I’d sensed that first night began to creep into our relationship.

It started with little things. He’d get angry over nothing, his eyes flashing with a rage that terrified me. Then he’d apologize, his voice soft and pleading, and I’d convince myself it was just stress.

But it wasn’t stress.

One night, after a particularly heated argument, he grabbed my arm so hard it left bruises. I tried to pull away, but he held on tighter, his face inches from mine.

“You’re mine,” he hissed. “And no one takes what’s mine.”

I should have left then. But I didn’t.

The truth came out slowly, in fragments.

Adrian wasn’t just a charming, mysterious man. He was dangerous. He had a past—a violent, criminal past—that he’d been running from for years. And now, it was catching up to him.

I found out by accident, stumbling across a hidden compartment in his desk. Inside were stacks of cash, fake passports, and a gun. When I confronted him, he didn’t deny it.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this,” he said, his voice calm, almost cold. “But now that you know, you have to understand. I did what I had to do to survive.”

I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that the man I loved was still in there somewhere, buried beneath the lies and the violence.

But I was wrong.

The final straw came the night he brought me to a warehouse on the outskirts of town.

“I need your help,” he said, his eyes pleading. “One last job, and then we can disappear. Start over.”

I should have said no. I should have run. But I didn’t.

The job went wrong. Someone got hurt. And as I stood there, watching the blood pool on the floor, I realized the truth: Adrian wasn’t just dangerous. He was evil.

And I had become his accomplice.

I don’t know how I got out. It’s all a blur—running, hiding, looking over my shoulder every second of every day. Adrian’s still out there, and I know he’s looking for me.

But I’m not the same person I was when I met him. The girl who thought love could conquer all is gone. In her place is someone harder, sharper, more cautious.

Love didn’t save me. It almost destroyed me.

And now, I’m left with the scars to prove it.
